What happens to my plates and registration?

You should remove your license plates before your vehicle is towed. Once you have them, you can either transfer them to another car or return them to your local DMV, depending on your state’s requirements.

In New Hampshire, you can usually transfer plates to your next vehicle, while in Massachusetts it is standard to return them to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to officially cancel the registration. We always recommend canceling your insurance policy after the sale to avoid unnecessary charges.

If you forget to remove your plates, contact us as soon as possible. If the vehicle has not yet been processed, we will make every effort to retrieve them for you. However, once recycling begins, recovery is unlikely, so it is always best to remove them before the tow truck arrives.
