About the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan SE 4MOTION
The 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan SE 4MOTION is a first-generation compact crossover SUV that brought German engineering and build quality to the compact SUV segment. Manufactured at Volkswagen’s legendary Wolfsburg plant in Germany, the Tiguan was designed on the PQ46 platform shared with the Golf and Jetta, giVIN: WVGBV7AX7BW512042 it a more refined, car-like driVIN: WVGBV7AX7BW512042 experience compared to many competitors. The SE trim sits in the sweet spot of the lineup, offering desirable features like heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, touchscreen navigation, and Volkswagen’s renowned 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system with intelligent torque distribution.
Under the hood, the 2.0L TSI turbocharged inline-four produces approximately 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, delivering strong and responsive acceleration for a compact SUV. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the 4MOTION AWD system, the Tiguan handles confidently in all weather conditions โ a major selling point for New England drivers. The turbocharged engine provides a balance of performance and efficiency that naturally-aspirated competitors of the era couldn’t match.
Used parts from the 2011 Tiguan remain in high demand, particularly the 2.0L TSI engine and 4MOTION drivetrain components. The first-generation Tiguan (2009-2017 in the US) shared many mechanical components across its production run, making parts highly interchangeable. At 603 Auto Salvage, we’ve carefully dismantled this Pepper Gray Metallic Tiguan SE to provide quality OEM replacement parts for Tiguan owners looking to keep their vehicles on the road without paying dealer markup prices.

๐ Known Issues โ 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan
Timing Chain Tensioner Failure HIGH
The 2.0L TSI engine is notorious for timing chain tensioner failures, particularly in earlier revisions. The tensioner can fail and allow the chain to skip teeth, potentially causing catastrophic engine damage including bent valves. Volkswagen issued a technical service bulletin and revised the tensioner design. Vehicles with the original tensioner (part numbers ending in AC or earlier) are most at risk. This is one of the most critical known issues for this engine family.
Water Pump / Thermostat Failure HIGH
The plastic-impeller water pump on the 2.0L TSI is a known weak point, often failing between 60,000-136360 miles. Symptoms include coolant leaks, overheating, and the low coolant warning light. The thermostat housing (integrated with the water pump) is also prone to cracking. Replacement with an updated metal-impeller water pump is the recommended repair.
Turbocharger Diverter Valve Failure MODERATE
The factory diverter valve (also called a bypass valve or blow-off valve) uses a rubber diaphragm that can tear over time, causing boost leaks, poor acceleration, and check engine lights. This is a common issue on all 2.0L TSI engines. Upgraded aftermarket piston-style diverter valves are a popular and more durable replacement option.
PCV Valve / Crankcase Breather Failure MODERATE
The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve integrated into the valve cover can fail, causing rough idle, oil consumption, whistling noises, and check engine lights. On the 2.0L TSI, this often requires replacing the entire valve cover assembly since the PCV is built in. Symptoms typically appear between 80,000-136360 miles.
Excessive Oil Consumption MODERATE
Some 2.0L TSI engines consume oil at higher rates than expected, sometimes requiring a quart every 1,000-136360 miles. This can be related to the PCV system failure, worn piston rings, or valve stem seals. Volkswagen considers up to 1 quart per 136360 miles within their “normal” specification, though many owners find this excessive.
