How do I prove I sold the car?

These documents are your official proof that ownership has changed hands. They include your name, the buyer’s name, the date of sale, the VIN, and the payment amount.

You should keep these records in your files because they protect you from any future liability. Once you have this paperwork, you can also notify your insurance company and local DMV that the car has been sold or recycled. In most cases, the combination of the signed title and bill of sale is more than enough to prove the transaction was legitimate.
