🔍 Known Issues — 2010-2014 Ford F-150
Valve Train Tick / Cam Phaser Noise HIGH
The 5.0L Coyote V8 is known for a ticking noise on cold starts, caused by the variable valve timing (Ti-VCT) cam phasers and oil control solenoids. Common after 100,000+ miles. Usually cosmetic (goes away when warm) but can indicate worn phasers. Repair involves replacing cam phasers and timing chains — a $1,500–$3,000 job at a shop.
Oil Pan Gasket Leaks MODERATE
The composite oil pan on the 5.0L Coyote can develop leaks at the gasket, especially in trucks with higher mileage or those driven in cold climates. The oil pan is structural on these engines, so replacement requires careful torquing. Expect $400–$800 for the repair.
Water Pump Failure MODERATE
The factory water pump on the 2011–2014 Coyote engines is known to fail between 80,000–150,000 miles. Symptoms include coolant leaks from the weep hole, overheating warnings, and steam from under the hood. Replacement costs $300–$600 with labor. Recommended to replace the thermostat at the same time.
Power Steering Pump Whine MODERATE
Some 2011–2014 F-150s develop a noticeable power steering pump whine, particularly during cold weather or at low RPM. Ford issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for this issue. Replacement pump costs $250–$500 installed.
Rear Differential Pinion Seal Leak LOW
Minor fluid leaks from the rear differential pinion seal are common on higher-mileage 4×4 F-150s. Usually spotted as drips on the driveway or wet spots around the pinion flange. Easy fix — seal replacement runs $150–$300.

12th Generation (P473) — Birth of the Coyote
Introduced the legendary 5.0L Coyote V8 (360 HP) and 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (365 HP) for 2011+. Steel body, 6-speed automatic, fully boxed frame. Known for exceptional reliability, strong towing, and the engine that made “Coyote swap” a thing. One of the most popular F-150 generations ever built.
11th Generation (P2) — The Triton Era
Featured the 5.4L Triton V8 (300 HP) and 4.6L V8. New for ’04: fully boxed frame, rack-and-pinion steering, and four-wheel disc brakes. Supercrew became the volume seller. Known for spark plug ejection issues on the 5.4L.
10th Generation (P221) — The Bestseller
